Are you a lawyer looking for a fun and rewarding challenge? We are a company dedicated to fostering the value of the internet as a global public resource, through a wide variety of products, including the Firefox web browser.  As our first dedicated IP counsel you will get to design and implement a shared vision to protect and foster IP innovation from the unique viewpoint of a transparent, participatory, and open source project. You’ll get to do a little bit of everything: from representing Mozilla externally at industry organizations, advising our internal product teams, managing an IP portfolio, and amplifying our positions through blogs and filings.

Responsibilities:

In your role, you will:

  • Develop strategy for the Mozilla Open Software Patent Initiative and oversee patent prosecution in collaboration with outside counsel
  • Work with our engineering and product teams to identify protectable innovations
  • Manage trademark clearance, prosecution, permissions, and enforcement in collaboration with outside counsel, community stakeholders, and marketing
  • Design and launch brand clearance processes and open source licensing best practices
  • Create and execute vision to further Mozilla’s position as a leader in open source
  • Represent Mozilla legal externally at global standards bodies
  • Oversee IP related litigation, impact filings, and risks  
  • Manage DMCA takedown and trademark policies and procedures
  • Engage cross-functionally across Mozilla with engineering, product management, business development, PR, community leaders, developers, and marketing on product related legal matters

Minimum qualifications:

  • D. degree and membership in a state bar with good standing
  • 6+ years as an attorney at a law firm and/or in-house legal department
  • Substantial patent experience
  • Substantial open source experience

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science (or equivalent experience)
  • High fluency in Internet technologies and software development
  • Trademark prosecution or litigation experience
  • Patent prosecution or litigation experience
  • Product counsel experience
  • Experience with standards organizations
