Senior Security Engineer, Subscriptions & Fraud

Apply for this job

Team:
Engineering
Locations:
Remote Canada, Remote US, Toronto, Vancouver

Mozilla’s Firefox Operations Security Team is looking for a Security Engineer to increase the security of our Firefox services, particularly our upcoming billing and subscription services. We are looking for someone with information security skills and an interest in cloud services. If you have worked or want to work on payment systems, fraud detection techniques, incident response or devops security, this may be the role for you.

We constantly launch new web services that, like everything else on the internet, get attacked. Your job will be to better protect them. You will be hardening our environments by working with developers and operators of Firefox services. This is a hands-on role that mixes programming in Java, Go and Python, security consulting and architecture. We think of this role as a senior one, but we’re open to talking to less senior candidates who have the right background and skills. We like unusual profiles a lot, and many of our most successful security engineers don’t have a formal security background.

What’s the day to day like?

  • Spend about half your time implementing fraud detection in our Java-based Apache Beam framework to detect payment fraud and subscriptions abuse.
  • Contribute to various open source projects like Sops, IPrepd, Frost and many others.
  • Work under a security lead and with your peers on maturing our controls. You’ll work as a team on a multi-year strategy, and it will take you across the entire infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with developers and operators on security incidents. You will be on security paging duty, but this is a low volume.

Your Professional Profile

  • You have a curious and flexible mind, able to apply critical thinking to new concepts.
  • Perhaps you don’t have a formal security background, but you have a strong interest in the field, and you’re eager to dive in.
  • We’re all remote, but we spend a fair amount of time working with others, so communication is key. You should be comfortable reaching out to people and driving discussions.
  • You love coding. We work primarily in Go, Python and Java, but if you have experience with any programming language, we think you’ll be ok picking things up. At any rate, we’ll send you a coding exercise to see where you’re at.
  • We don’t filter people out based on work experience or degree. Tell us why you think you would be a good fit, and we’ll listen.

What's the team like?

We are a distributed, remote, hands-on security team of about a dozen people. Our members span three continents and cover a broad range of security area across the entire stack of firefox services.

We each have our areas of expertise, but we all write code, and we are all embedded with devs and ops. Staying close to the wire and providing high quality security services is important to us.

Our remote culture is at the core of everything we do. We use chat, videoconferences, documents and email to keep everyone in the loop. We make sure no one feel isolated.

We span many time zones and we respect family time and weekends. Sometimes we have to pull long hours to respond to security incidents, but we work hard to make sure it's the exception, and not the rule.

Feel good about your work again.
