Why join Mozilla engineering?

Learn: Code review at Mozilla includes pushing to passionate contributors around the world. Building Firefox and its family of products requires knowledge up and down the stack, and extremely high standards for security and optimization. Beyond the browser, we’re developing AR/VR, IoT, and voice recognition products that respect and protect privacy.

Grow: We’re dedicated to helping every team member develop. We give engineers trust and responsibility from day one, offer generous stipends for learning opportunities, and provide mentorship, especially around key leadership skills like collaboration and clear, kind communication.

Make Your Mark: We’re small but mighty, challenging the biggest behemoths on the internet with a staff the size of their marketing departments. That means every engineer can have an outsized impact on products that touch tens of millions of users—ultimately influencing how the entire internet works.

The Role

The Firefox Platform Layout team is a global community of engineers and product managers who care deeply about how the Web looks. We are the team responsible for page layout, CSS, images, text, printing, and animations in Gecko, the engine behind Firefox. Are you the type of software engineer who wants to collaborate with other driven, committed team members to help bring the Open Web to millions of people? Do you have experience with either C++ or Rust? If so, we'd love to hear from you!

On our team, you will be able to design and develop standards-compliant CSS and page layout features that all of our users see, helping make the Web Platform more usable, accessible, and beautiful over time.

Our team is geographically-distributed, and working in the open is the norm. You can expect to work on the Firefox engine code targeting a number of platforms, including Android, Windows, Linux, and macOS. An interest in learning new techniques, tools, and skills with a curiosity for reading lots of existing code is essential to success.

As a member of our team you will:

  • Improve the layout, CSS styling, and animation capabilities of our Web engine, with a focus on performance, Web compatibility, and standards correctness
  • Write new CSS and layout features, improve existing features, and write tests to mitigate against future regressions
  • Read and implement W3C standard specifications, potentially contributing to the standards process by providing feedback or raising issues
  • Help triage, test and fix reported bugs, reducing them to root causes and exploring potential solutions
  • Participate in regular code reviews, team meetings, and planning sessions
  • Pair with local mentors while working with a distributed team and the worldwide Mozilla community
  • Travel occasionally, for both Mozilla-wide all hands meetings as well as team collaboration work weeks

Your profile:

We value a diversity of voices on our team. You don't need to check every box on this list to apply.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in computer science or similar field
  • Experience developing software in C, C++ or Rust
  • Strong motivation to learn new tools and techniques for improving existing software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to quickly learn and be effective with a large code base

Bonus points if you have any of the following:

  • Experience with debugging and working in a multithreaded environment
  • Familiarity with Android application programming, profiling and debugging
  • Experience using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Familiarity with low-level graphics programming APIs (OpenGL or others)

About Mozilla

A lot of companies say they’re “mission-driven.” Our unique corporate structure guarantees that every decision we make upholds our mission: to make sure the internet stays available, safe, and welcoming to everyone. Beholden to neither shareholders nor investors, Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the not-for-profit Mozilla Foundation.

Along with 20,000+ volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozilla Corporation’s staff designs, builds, and distributes software that allows people to enjoy the internet on their own terms. Our flagship product — the Firefox browser — has expanded into a family of products that protects users and alerts them of risks. Mozilla’s Emerging Technologies group incubated and sponsors Rust — Stack Overflow’s “most loved programming language” for the last four years — and is building safe, private versions of virtual reality, internet of things, and voice recognition.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
