The Ford Foundation and Mozilla are partnering to strengthen organizations in the Global South by layering technology strategies into their work. Critical civil society organizations in the Global South exist to fight inequality, protect the public, and expand democracy. In an era of ubiquitous technology, it’s paramount that these organizations work to uphold the rights of individuals and communities and to address societal issues as they converge with the digital world. This new fellowship program seeks to increase the capacity of these organizations to address technology issues by connecting them with expert technologist Fellows. The program is a $2 million initiative with at least a 30-month commitment.

As the Program Officer leading this initiative, you will cultivate, recruit, support, and track a cohort of high-impact Fellows within select organizations and coalitions that are foundational to the strength and capacity of regional civil society in Latin America, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa. You will empower the Fellows you work with to recognize, design, and implement strategies that address issues at the intersection of technology and society. As part of the larger Fellowships and Awards team, you will also work collaboratively across fellowship and awards initiatives as assigned.

This role reports to the Director, Leadership Programs.

Primary Responsibilities:

Portfolio Management

  • Fellow and Host Organization Recruitment: Cultivate, recruit, and match expert technologists with key civil society organizations in Latin America, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa to create long-term strategic change at the nexus of technology and social justice.
  • Program Management: Lead the execution of a new Mozilla Fellows track, including making critical decisions about the relationship between host organizations and Fellows, balancing partner needs, and crafting systems and processes that will allow the Fellows to have maximum impact.
  • Grant Management: Work with the Mozilla operations team and the Director, Leadership Programs to track progress against grant goals and to forecast and track budget expenditures. Assure compliance with all Mozilla and funder policies and procedures.
  • Fellow Mentorship: Serve as an active thought partner and advisor to the Fellows, working with them both individually and as a cohort to advance their work and to cultivate meaningful connects for them within and beyond Mozilla. Note that the Fellows in this Program Officer’s assigned portfolio will be researching the intersection of social justice and technology in deeply localized contexts across the Global South; being able to effectively partner with them as a peer and mentor will be a key requirement for this role.

External Engagement

  • Partner Management: Manage Mozilla’s relationships with the public interest technology and civil society organizations at which assigned fellows will be hosted.
  • Funder Cultivation: Drive ongoing collaboration with and reporting to the initiative’s funders. Cultivate relationships with potential future donors and partners in collaboration with team members and the Fundraising team.
  • Field Development: Serve as a forward-thinking leader in the public interest technology and internet health spaces, contributing findings from the program back to the field at large.

Work Across the Organization

  • Team Collaboration: Actively collaborate with the Fellowships & Awards team to advance the overall aims of the team. Support the design and execution of key team events such as onboarding, work weeks, and MozFest.
  • Storytelling: Work collaboratively with the communications team to tell the story of our investments in leaders to funders, to the press, and to the public at large.
  • Mission Advancement: Collaborate regularly with internal teams to ensure alignment with Mozilla’s mission and goals and to support the integration of fellows into other initiatives at Mozilla.

Skills & Experience:

You have:

  • 5-7 years of relevant job experience; BA/BS or equivalent experience
  • Experience leading complex grant-funded programs
  • Demonstrated expertise working across multiple countries and cultures
  • Extensive experience working in Latin America, Africa, South Asia, or the Middle East
  • Demonstrated commitment to using technology to further social justice or strengthen civil society
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and in cross-functional, distributed teams
  • Willingness to travel extensively, including internationally, to meet with project partners and to conduct site-visits as appropriate and necessary
  • Fluency in multiple languages relevant to the program’s geographic focus areas preferred
